Sanitary facilities for people with disabilities: how to make bathroom use more accessible.

A bathroom for the disabled in a residential home or public place must first of all guarantee sufficient space for movement. In the bathroom, the manoeuvrability of a wheelchair required to use the sanitary facilities must be ensured with appropriate spatial arrangements. In particular, the following must be guaranteed

• the space required for the wheelchair to approach the sanitary facilities from the side;
• the space required for the frontal approach of the wheelchair to the washbasin, which must be of the shelf type;
• the provision of appropriate handrails and an emergency bell placed near the toilet and tub.

In addition to space to manoeuvre, easy-to-use and easy-to-reach sanitary fittings and taps must be installed.
