Genoa Aquarium: Idral Case History

Case History – Genoa Aquarium: A Landmark Project Across Accessibility, Sustainability and Design

The Genoa Aquarium is not only one of Italy's leading tourist attractions: it is also a symbol of environmental education, scientific research and inclusion. With over one million visitors a year, it demands the highest standards in terms of functionality, hygiene, durability and accessibility of its spaces. It is within this context that the recent refurbishment of its public restrooms takes place — an ambitious project in which the technical solutions designed by Idral were selected as a key partner.

A Tailor-Made Project for an Iconic Setting

To respond to the complexity of the setting, custom-made Solid Surface washbasins (mod. HLICX-04000) were installed. The result is an elegant, seamless installation that ensures durability, ease of maintenance and harmonious integration with the surfaces and materials of the surrounding environment.

The Idral 500.12/R sensor-operated electronic taps allow controlled, hygienic water delivery, reducing waste and contributing to the facility's environmental sustainability goals. The entire system is designed to efficiently support intensive use without compromising end-user comfort.

Accessibility at the Heart of the Project

Particular attention was devoted to the design of the low-mobility restroom, equipped with Idral devices certified for safety and usability:

  • Wall-hung WC 10266 – designed to ensure comfort and accessibility, with adjustable height and an easily sanitised, hygienic surface.
  • Ergonomic washbasin 10191 – with reduced depth and a shape studied to allow approach even from a wheelchair.
  • Electronic mixer 500.12 – fitted with a photocell sensor for easy use by everyone, including people with reduced mobility.
  • Tilting mirror 12010 – optimal visibility even when seated, with no need for manual adjustment.
  • Complete set of safety grab rails (mod. 12000V) – strategically positioned to ease movement and ensure maximum stability and support.

All elements comply with accessibility regulations, helping to create a genuinely inclusive, functional space consistent with the Aquarium's social mission.

A Space Designed for the Youngest Visitors Too

The project also included a dedicated children's restroom — an essential element in an educational and outreach facility such as the Genoa Aquarium. For this space, products from the Idral KIDS range were chosen, specifically designed for children with reduced dimensions, ergonomic shapes and safe materials: the 10306 WC and the HLICX-34000 tilting changing table, accessible and intuitive, allowing parents to easily care for infants.

Idral's long experience in designing solutions for children made it possible to create an environment that fosters autonomy, responsible play and learning about the correct use of water. A restroom designed for the youngest also means reinforcing the Aquarium's educational message.
