We finally have some good news and as promised we give you the details of the 2021 water bonus. In fact, on 23 October, the Decree of the Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITE) of 27 September 2021 was published , which explains the implementation modalities of the so-called 'water bonus'.

What is the water bonus 2021

The water bonus is a subsidy, in the form of a reimbursement of up to €1,000 in favour of individuals, aimed at saving water resources by replacing taps, mixers, showers and sanitary fi xtures with the latest generation of water-saving solutions .

Eligible for the water bonus are natural persons of age and resident in Italy, holders of property rights or other rights in rem, as well as personal rights of enjoyment already registered on the date of submission of the application, on existing buildings, parts of existing buildings, or individual property units, for interventions of

  1. "supply and installation of ceramic sanitary ware with a maximum drainage volume of 6 litres or less and related drainage systems, including related plumbing and masonry work and the dismantling and decommissioning of pre-existing systems
  2. supply and installation of taps and mixers for bathrooms and kitchens, including water flow control devices with a flow rate equal to or less than 6 litres per minute, and of shower heads and shower columns with a flow rate equal to or less than 9 litres per minute, including any related plumbing and masonry work and the dismantling and decommissioning of pre-existing systems." (Source: MITE Decree of 27 September 2021).

The application may only be submitted for one property, for one time and by one joint holder/owner of the right in rem or personal right of enjoyment. The water bonus

  • does not constitute taxable income of the beneficiary
  • does not count towards the value of the indicator of the equivalent economic situation (ISEE);
  • is an alternative to and cannot be combined, in relation to the same items of expenditure, with other tax benefits relating to the supply, laying and installation of the same goods.

How to apply for the water bonus

The funds allocated are €20 million for the year 2021 to cover expenses actually incurred from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021. According to the decree, "Water bonuses are issued in the order in which applications are submitted until the available resources are exhausted," so there is no time to lose!

To apply, beneficiaries have to apply by registering on a web application called 'Water Bonus Platform' accessible, after authentication, from the website of the Ministry of Ecological Transition(www.mite.gov.it). At this moment, the platform is not yet active, but will be available 'within 60 days from the date of registration of the ministerial decree', i.e. by 26 November, but it could go into operation even earlier. We will keep you informed of its activation so that you can apply as soon as possible.

When registering, the beneficiary will have to indicate:

  1. first name, surname, tax code of the beneficiary
  2. amount of the expenditure incurred, for which reimbursement is requested;
  3. quantity of the good and specifications of the installation;
  4. technical specifications, for each asset replaced by water flow restricting devices, as well as the specification of the maximum water flow rate (in l/min) of the purchased product;
  5. cadastral identification of the property (Municipality, Section, Urban Section, Sheet, Parcel, Sub-terminal) for which the reimbursement request has been submitted
  6. declaration of not having benefited from other tax benefits for the supply, laying and installation of the same goods;
  7. details of the beneficiary's bank/post account (Iban) to which the reimbursement is to be credited;
  8. indication of the legal title for which the bonus is requested (owner, joint owner, tenant, usufructuary, etc.);
  9. certification by the applicant if not owner or co-owner of the details of the contract from which he/she derives his/her title;
  10. proof of communication to the co-owner/co-owner, identified by name, surname and tax code, of the wish to benefit from the bonus.

It will also be necessary to enclose a copy of the electronic invoice or commercial document showing the tax code of the person requesting the credit, so it will be important to have all the information and documents ready to facilitate the request for the water bonus as they activate the portal.
